Canoeing and Kayaking

Courses:

Beginner and Intermediate courses available for groups and individuals: we can provide everything up to advanced white water.

Beginners:

Come for a Canadian Canoeing day - either on your own or in a small group. We'll teach you the basics of paddling and manoeuvring the canoe on the water, provide background on the history of the sport and the equipment used, and make sure you can safely handle the boat on land. This day will be run by one of our BCU Level two or three coaches, all of whom are experienced paddlers and patient and enthusiastic teachers.

Intermediate:

If you need specific coaching on an area of paddling you are having difficulty with, a day or half day with our Activities Manager (Cedric - Level 4 coach) will help you iron it out. We'll ask you to have a chat with Cedric when you book so he knows what you'll need to focus on and can tailor the session accordingly. Anything up to 4* standard in canoe or kayak.

Expeditions and River Trips:

We'll be posting more information about trips for this winter season in the next few weeks. Please drop us an email if there's anything particular you fancy doing - or if you'd like us to notify you when this section updates. Emails to canoe@vividevents.co.uk please!

British Canoe Union Star Awards

We run the new syllabus 1, 2,3 and 4 star training and assessment courses on various dates through the year. We are happy to run private courses for small groups or individuals (although we do need at least two people for 3* due to the rescue element). Please have a look at the BCU website for prerequisites and syllabuses.

BCU Foundation Safety and Rescue    (£50/person)

As for the star awards; we will post new dates on here as they come up and we're happy to organise for minimum 4 people. We generally don't go beyond September with these, due to the amount of time spent in the water! The course is a minimum of six hours and looks at dealing with incidents involving a variety of craft (this replaces the BCU Canoe Safety Test).

Canoe Hire (groups only):

Fleet Hire of canoes and canoe trailer available for groups with a Level 3 coach. We'll need to see a copy of your certificates, and proof that you have the necessary insurance cover and licence (where applicable). Discount available for groups staying with us.

Accommodation:

We like paddlers because you come in the winter! We have a small drying room, serious amounts of both central heating and hot water for showers, and plenty of other space to hang kit to dry.

  • We're right on the River Greta (normal grade 3) - just over the road from the centre

  • Easy access to all Lakeland rivers and becks

  • Give us a ring to find out about River Greta conditions

  • Kayak storage available

  • We've got the drying room working again!

Background Info:

Our Activities Manager (Cedric) is a keen paddler and is working his way through the canoe and kayak instructor grades. Canoeing also seems to be the favourite subject for most of our instructors, a lot of them have been off doing big river trips in exotic countries in recent years - and some of them have specialised in building their own boats. And we also have the River Greta a few metres from the centre, Derwentwater a few minutes' walk away and  we're within easy reach of the fantastic rivers of the Lakes and Border regions.
