The Best of Borrowdale and the Lake District; all in one day...

Friday night        Groups arrive and check into dorms (any time between 4 and 11pm). Head into Keswick for a little light refreshment - or arrange to meet your group in the Twa Dogs Inn, next door.

Saturday            Breakfast at 08:30. Your instructor will meet you at breakfast and run through the kit and safety briefings for the day's activities (they'll need to know about any medical problems at this stage so feel free to take them to one side if you'd rather discuss this in private - you should inform us of anything major at the time of booking).

The day starts off with a nice gentle abseil off a big cliff to get you warmed up. We'll usually pick one of the crags in the spectacular Borrowdale Valley (about 20 minutes' drive from the hostel). Abseiling is a great adrenalin rush, but it's not as intimidating as it might sound and our instructors will help the nervous overcome their fears!

You'll then head back up Borrowdale to Derwentwater and meet up with your instructors at the main Keswick landings for:

Raft building; where strategy may win out over brute strength...or then again it may not! You'll be divided into teams and will construct a raft from poles, barrels and rope which you then race around a course - whichever team gets back first with all members still attached to at least one bit of raft, wins (we have recently lifted our ban on structural engineers taking part but they may have to agree to be restrained if it all gets too much for them). Do bear in mind that if it's a nice day you may have a sizeable crowd cheering you on so feel free to come in costume....

After the raft race you'll generally head back to the hostel for a shower and change, and to pick up packed lunches. Alternatively, we can book you into one of the local pubs for lunch, either in Keswick or on the way to the ghyll scramble.

The ghyll is about 15 minutes' drive from the hostel, and you can follow our instructors up in your own cars. We provide wetsuits when we think you'll need them!

Ghyll Scrambling:

Using a range of dramatic sites throughout the Lake District, groups are taken on an exhilarating descent of a fast flowing mountain stream. Team members have to support and encourage each other as you scramble over rocks and through deep pools. For the adventurous there are several jumps and a plunge into deep swirling water which will really test your nerve!

Then it's back to Keswick (maybe stopping for a quick pint at one of the country pubs on the route back) for a taste of the Saturday Night Keswick Experience...

Sunday              Breakfast at 08:30 (ish!)

Have a mooch around Keswick; take the launch around the lake; go for a gentle stroll or hire mountain bikes if you're feeling energetic - loads of options. Let us know if you'd like any suggestions, or have something specific in mind...

Why not have a go at paintball (£35 supplement) - held at Holmescales near Kendal (10 minutes' drive from M6 southbound) on your way home?

Notes:

  • Pub Lunch may be a bit more expensive than packed - please check with the office on booking. Anyone participating in activities in the afternoon must not have too much to drink at lunchtime; you should be under the UK driving limit for alcohol (or you won't be taking part!).

Common to all packages:

  • Arrival between 4pm and 11pm Friday - why not arrange to meet in the Twa Dogs Inn next door?

  • Accommodation is bunkhouse style in our hostel - see the Denton House hostel pages for further details. You will have exclusive use of dorms of 4 to 12 beds. You don't need to bring a sleeping bag, but don't forget towels.

  • Transport is not included but can be arranged.

  • We may change the order in which activities are run; this page is a guideline only!

  • Please check out by 11:00am on Sunday, unless you are doing activities Sunday morning. You're welcome to leave cars in the car park for the day.

  • We're very laid back about most things, but please read the  Hostel Info and Rules before you book!

  • We don't make restaurant bookings for groups, but please see the Alternative Guide pages for plenty of suggestions and contact details - we've indicated those that are good for big groups. We've also given details of many of the pubs that are worth a look.

  • If you'd like to add or swap any activities, or are interested in things we don't have listed, give the office a call or email and we'll see what we can do!
