5 Tips for Getting Your Wedding Reception Music Right

Your wedding reception is one of the biggest celebrations you’ll ever plan. From the moment your guests arrive to the final song of the night, music plays a huge part in creating an incredible atmosphere. Do it right, and you’ll have a wedding you’ll remember forever.
But how do you make sure you get your wedding reception music right?
Whether you’re planning a small, relaxed celebration or a huge party with a packed dancefloor, here are seven things we recommend thinking about when planning your wedding music.
Your guests won’t all have the same taste in music… and that’s okay!
A wedding might have grandparents who love the classics, friends who want the latest chart hits and everyone in between. The key is finding a balance that works for the people in the room while still making sure the music reflects you.
A good wedding DJ will have a wide range of music available and be able to adapt throughout the evening by reading the crowd. (That’s us!)
And don’t be afraid to let your guests have a little input too. A great idea is to ask your guests to write down two songs they love on your wedding invitations. It gives your DJ an idea of what your guests enjoy and gives you a ready-made list of songs that could get people dancing on the night.
And of course, requests don’t have to stop there. Your guests can make requests during the evening too!
1. Know Your Guests
Your first dance is one of the most special moments of the day, but it doesn’t have to follow a set schedule.
Want to dance to the whole song together? Absolutely.
Want your guests to join you halfway through? You can do that too.
It’s worth discussing this with your DJ beforehand so everyone knows exactly what is going to happen. At Vivid Events, we’ll have two planning meetings before your wedding so we can go through all of these details with you.

2. Think About Your First Dance
It’s tempting to create a huge Spotify playlist with every song you’d like to hear throughout the evening. But you don’t need to plan every single song.
Instead, give your DJ some direction. Tell them your favourite songs, your must-plays, the songs you’d rather avoid and the kind of atmosphere you’re hoping to create. From there, your DJ can read the room and adapt the music depending on what’s happening on the dancefloor.
A wedding reception isn’t always predictable… and that’s what makes it fun!
You might have planned to play one particular song at, say, 9pm, but if the dancefloor is absolutely packed and everyone is loving a particular style of music, it might make more sense to stay with that style/genre for a little longer.
3. Don’t Over-Plan Your Playlist
Music is only one part of creating a great evening atmosphere.
Think about the room itself too.
If your venue allows it, ask whether the main lights can be dimmed once the evening celebrations begin. Bright overhead lighting can make a dancefloor feel very different from a room with softer lighting and professional DJ lighting.
It is a party after all!
4. Think About The Atmosphere
